Abstract
Synthetic resins in three stages of condensation, fusible and soluble, fusible and insoluble, and infusible and insoluble are obtained by simultaneous condensation of a ketone, a phenolic body, and formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, hexamethylenetetramine, or furfural. Suitable phenols are the phenolic bodies in coal tar boiling between 184 DEG C. and 224 DEG C., such as phenol, the cresols, the xylenols, pyro-cresols, all mono-, di-, or trihydric phenols and phenol alcohols. Light or heavy acetone oils may be employed as the ketone. Condensing agents may be alkaline or acid but are preferably alkaline hydroxides or carbonates. The resins may be used for varnishes, electric insulation, for translucent articles such as tobacco pipe mouthpieces, or may be mixed with fillers such as sawdust or asbestos at any intermediate stage of the condensation. An example shows the condensation of coal tar oils, boiling between 184 DEG and 224 DEG C. and redistilled to remove tarry matter, with acetone and paraformaldehyde in presence of caustic alkali.
