Abstract

Synthetic resins are obtained by condensing in the presence of an acid or alkaline catalyst with a phenol (e.g. phenol or m-cresol) and an aldehyde (e.g. formaldehyde) the mixture of hydrocarbons obtained by distillation of high temperature tar pitch of softening point 70 DEG Kraemer-Sarnow until its hardness reaches 140 DEG K.-S. and known as "red oil." The resins may be mixed with fillers (e.g. saw-dust), hardeners (e.g. hexamethylenetetramine), hardening accelerators (e.g. lime) and lubricants (e.g. stearic acid) to obtain compositions suitable for the manufacture of mouldings, laminated materials, plywood, abrasive wheels, coating compositions and impregnants for wood. In an example: a condensate of "red oil," phenol and formaldehyde is mixed with saw-dust, lime, hexamethylene tetramine, and stearic acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use as phenols of xylenols, as aldehyde of trioxymethylene and to the preparation of laminated materials by hot-pressing resin-impregnated sheets of paper or fabric. In additional examples: a condensate of "red oil," phenol, and formaldehyde is mixed with sawdust, lime, hexamethylene tetramine, aluminium stearate and a dye or pigment to give a moulding powder; a similar condensate is dissolved in alcohol-benzene mixture to give a binder and coating composition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
