Abstract

Phenol-aldehyde resins blendible with drying oils to give varnishes are obtained by condensing a mixture of o-cresol and a lesser proportion of a monohydric phenol having an alkyl or cycloalkyl substituent in the p-position and its other two reactive positions free with a substantially equimolecular proportion of formaldehyde in the presence of a strongly alkaline catalyst. As modifying phenols there are specified: p-cresol, p-tertiary butyl phenol, p-tertiary amyl phenol, p-tertiary octylphenol and p-cyclohexyl phenol, 10 to 30 per cent being used in proportion to the o-cresol. In examples: (1) 210 parts cresol and 90 parts tert. butyl phenol, 210 parts 36.5 per cent formaldehyde and 1.5 parts caustic soda are boiled under reflux for 3 hours. The product is separated into layers and the upper aqueous layer rejected. The oily resole layer is heated in a stream of carbon dioxide to 130 DEG C. for 15 mins. The brittle solid obtained on cooling is soluble in tung oil to give a varnish. Specification 433,539 is referred to.
