Abstract

One hydroxyl equivalent of a phenol, 3,31- or 4,41-methylene bisphenol or a mixture thereof, is reacted at raised temperature in aqueous medium initially with 2.1 to 3.25 mols. formaldehyde and 0.3 to 0.6 mols. alkali metal hydroxide, the proportion of alkali metal hydroxide being 14-20 mol. per cent based on the formaldehyde, until a viscosity of at least 100 MacMichael 26d units at 70 DEG F. is attained, additional aqueous alkali metal hydroxide is added to a total not exceeding 0.8 mol. and reaction is continued at raised temperature until the viscosity at 70 DEG F. is 50-250 Mac-Michael units. Still more aqueous alkali metal hydroxide is then added to a total of 1.0 to 2.0 mols. and reaction continued at raised temperature, the viscosity at 70 DEG F. after addition of each increment not being allowed to exceed 150 MacMichael units, and finally the reaction mixture is rapidly cooled. Up to 15% by weight of the phenol may be replaced by cresols, xylenols or polyphenyl phenols, which occur in still bottoms during purification by distillation of phenol and vanillin. The highly reactive products may be used as adhesives for wood substitutes, paper, cardboard or cloth. Conventional additives, e.g. fillers, soda ash, soluble silicates, ammonia, defoamers, hardeners, buffers salts, dyes, carboxy-methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyelectrolytes, polyolefins or polyesters, may be added. The products of the invention may also be used in admixture with conventional protein adhesives.
