Abstract
Water-insoluble resins are prepared from polyhydric phenols, especially tannins, alone or in association with monohydric phenols, with formaldehyde or an equivalent methylene body under such conditions that the product will be sulphited to a degree such that the NaCl value (a measure of the cationic activity of the resin) is greater than 10. The term sulphited indicates treatment with sulphur dioxide, sulphites or their obvious p chemical equivalent. The resins may be prepared in the presence of the sulphiting agent, the A-stage condensation products may be sulphited, or the resins may be prepared from a sulphited phenol. The products may be used in the removal of certain cations from liquids. Suitable phenolic raw materials include sulphited quebracho, mimosa, black wattle, hemlock, gambier, uranday, mangrove and Indian cutch tannins, catechol, resorcinol, quinol and gambier catechin. In an example, a tannin or polyhydric phenol (catechin, liquid hemlock, liquid mimosa, mangrove, quebracho, or resorcinol) is heated with aqueous sodium sulphite, metabisulphite, or bisulphite, and the product condensed with aqueous formaldehyde. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of products obtained by condensing (1) resorcinol, sodium sulphite and formalin, (2) extra sulphited commercial quebracho and aqueous formaldehyde, (3) gambier tannin, sodium sulphite and formalin in presence of caustic soda, (4) gambier tannin, aqueous formaldehyde, sodium sulphite and formaldehyde, (5) gambier tannin, sodium sulphite, and furfural, (6) black wattle (mimosa) tannin, sulphurous acid and formaldehyde with and without caustic soda. Specifications 450,308 and 450,309 are referred to.
