Abstract

Synthetic tanning agents are obtained by further condensing mixed condensation products of sulphonic acids of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated phenols and aldehydes with mono- or di-hydroxy phenols and aldehydes in an acid medium. Specified phenols for the further condensation include phenol itself, cresols, xylenols, chlorophenols, naphthols, 4, 41-dihydroxy diphenyl methane, 4, 41 dihydroxy-diphenyl dimethyl methane, 4, 41-dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphone, pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, and 1, 5-dihydroxy naphthalene. Urea, thiourea, melamine and dicyandiamide may partially replace the phenol. Formaldehyde or formaldehyde-donating substances are the only specified aldehydes. Tannins can be obtained which contain 5 to 10 phenolic hydroxyl groups per sulphonic acid group. In one of the eight examples, the preliminary condensation product is obtained from a technical phenol chlorination mixture containing 53% o- and 43% p-chlorophenol, a naphthalene sulphonation mixture and an aqueous formaldehyde solution, and this is further condensed with empyreumatic oil and formaldehyde to give a readily pourable, water-soluble tanning syrup. Other constituents of the precondensates specified in the examples are phenanthrene sulphonic acid, o-chlorophenol, and 6-chloro-o-cresol. Other phenols exemplified for the further condensation are phenol itself, pyrocatechol, and a technical mixture of o- and p-hydroxy-diphenyl.
