Abstract

Synthetic tanning agents are produced (1) by condensing ketones, oxyketones or oxyaldehydes with non-sulphonated polyvalent aromatic hydroxy compounds, or (2) by condensing waste sulphite cellulose liquor with monovalent aromatic hydroxy compounds in alkaline media. In condensation (1) waste sulphite cellulose liquor or other products of the decomposition of wood containing oxyketones or oxyaldehydes may be employed, as well as substances which are readily converted into oxyketones or oxyaldehydes, for example, starch dextrin, and cellulose; the products of the condensation, being difficulty soluble in water, may be dissolved by the aid of aromatic sulphonic acids or salts thereof, for example, toluene sulphonic acid or its sodium salt. In condensation (2), the waste sulphite cellulose liquor may be replaced by other products of the decomposition of wood containing oxyketones or oxyaldehydes. The products of both condensations may be employed in conjunction with water-soluble synthetic tanning agents, including waste sulphite cellulose liquor; for example, Neradol D, the tanning material described in example 1 of Specification 7137/13, or that prepared by the sulphonation of crude anthracene. Examples are given of the preparation and application of tanning agents, the reacting materials for which comprise on the one hand phenol, cresols, resorcinol, pyrogallol, and 2 : 7-dihydroxynaphthalene, and on the other hand, acetone, aldol, the product of the condensation of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, laevulinic acid, salicylic aldehyde, fruit sugar, grape sugar, and waste sulphite cellulose liquor.
