Abstract

415,737. Mercury and other conducting-liquid switches ; electromagnetic switches. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Feb. 26, 1934, No. 6234. Convention date, March 1, 1933. [Class 38 (v).] A tilting mercury switch which may be operated electromagnetically comprises an outer fixed glass tube 1 and an inner tiltable tube 2 of fireproof material. In the form shown, the tube 2 is mounted on a spring 6 connected to a lead 7 and floats in mercury 12 contained in the tube 1. The other lead 9 passes through a hole in the tube 2 into mercury within the tube 2. The tube 2 carries an armature 4 adapted to be attracted by an electromagnet 15 whereupon mercury enters through a hole 13 and meets the main body of mercury in the tube 2 to complete the circuit between the leads 7, 9. In modifications, the tube 2 has a knife edge or other pivotal mounting and a magnet may be used to hold the tube in place ; the armature may be lamellar and have several holes through it instead of only one as shown ; the tube 2 may have several holes 13 ; a delayed action may be produced by throttling the hole 13 ; buffers may be mounted between the tubes 1, 2 and the tube 2 may be suitably guided ; and one magnet may operate several switches.
