[Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii).] A blasting-cartridge according to the invention comprises a closed rigid metal vessel capable of withstanding substantial internal pressures at least about 2 tons per sq. in. and containing a charge and means for igniting the same, the charge consisting of a mixture of a burning explosive and a solid cooling salt, the quantity of burning explosive being itself sufficient to burst the vessel or a part of its wall. The burning explosive may be a mixture of a nitrate or perchlorate with carbon or carbonaceous materials with or without other combustible materials such as sulphur. The burning explosive and the cooling salts are preferably used in granular form. Cooling salts mentioned are potassium and sodium chloride and ammonium oxalate and bicarbonate. In one example, black-powder is mixed with 30 per cent of sodium chloride and put with an electric fuze 3 in a heavy steel vessel 1 capable of resisting 40 tons per sq. in. and closed by a steel disc 4 capable of resisting 15 tons per sq. in. In a modification, the vessel is of galvanized iron capable of resisting more than 2 tons per sq. in. and is burst by a charge of black-powder mixed with 30 per cent of ammonium oxalate.
