[Class 35.] In a portable electric drilling machine, to be used for coal mining or for drilling metal, and which may also be used for grinding or percussive tools, such as motor-driven chisels &c., the end of the motor shaft remote from the gearing 14 which drives the drill socket 15 carries a fan 16 which draws air through apertures 19 in a breast plate 17 and delivers it at 18 around the motor casing 12 to cool the motor. Depressions 22 are provided in the plate 17 to allow the air to enter laterally when the apertures 19 are covered by the body of the operator and screws located in the apertures attach the plate to the casing 12. Radial ribs 20 on the casing guide the air flow around the casing to increase the cooling effect and also take the end thrust of the plate on the machine. The plate is formed as a casting and is strengthened by ribs 21. Grid plates 19<a> are inserted in the air passages.
