Abstract
414,765. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., WESTON, W. K., and CURRAH, L. E., Connaught House, Aldwych, London. Feb. 13, 1933, No. 4360. [Class 36.] In a long cable manufactured in sections provided with temporary lead sheaths, which after the connection together of the sections are stripped off and replaced by a single lead sheath which extends over the whole cable, the stripped cable traverses a drying chamber before passing to the lead press. The Figure shows an arrangement wherein a continuous length of cable C, comprising a number of jointed sections with temporary sheaths, is passed in succession through a stripping machine S, a drying oven DO which may be evacuated or through which dry air may be passed, and a lead press LP. The stripping machine removes the temporary sheathing from the cable which is then coiled a number of times around a drum DR in the drying oven. A continuous sheathing is applied to the cable by the lead press LP. To prevent the cable from absorbing moisture as it leaves the drying oven, it is passed through a tube T connecting the oven to the lead press and preferably flexible and heated. A similar tube may connect the oven to the stripping machine, or the stripping machine may be disposed at the end of the oven. To increase the time of drying the joints between the sections of cable, the recharging of the lead press may take place when a joint is in the oven. The drum DR may be freely mounted or may be driven in synchronism with the stripping machine and lead press. In a modified arrangement the drying oven is in the form of a tube having a number of drums or guide rollers and is heated either by hot air or by electric heating elements.
