Abstract

413,818. Printing - machines. HARRILD & SONS, Ltd., and RANGER, A. W., Fleet Works, Norwich Street, Fetter Lane, London. March 23, 1933, No. 8826. [Class 100 (ii).] Inking-apparatus.-In geared inking-mechanism for platen printing-presses, in which the inking-roller carriage is reciprocated over the forme and over an ink-distributing drum, the inking-mechanism being driven by a pinion on the carriage meshing constantly with a stationary rack on the press frame, and having means for interrupting the geared drive to the inking- rollers while these rollers are in contact with the inking-drum, the interrupting means comprises a clutch situated between the pinion and the inking-rollers. The forme is inked by rollers 9, Fig. 2, which, together with a rider roller 16, are mounted in a carriage 10, reciprocated over the forme and distributing-drum 4 by linkwork actuated by the movements of the platen. The rollers 9 are driven frictionally by the roller 16, which is itself positively driven from a rack 20 that drives a pinion 18 loose on the roller shaft and adapted to be clutched to the roller 16, for example by a dog clutch or by a friction clutch. Axial reciprocation of the roller 16 is effected by a cam surface 26 against which bears a roller carried by a pivoted lever 24, the other end of which engages the end of the roller 16, which is slidably mounted on its shaft, and in the case of a dog clutch the teeth are sufficiently long to allow for the axial reciprocation. As the carriage 10 moves towards the drum 4, the rollers 9 continue to be frictionally driven by the roller 16, which in turn is positively driven by the rack 20 until the inking- rollers are almost in contact with the drum 4, when the part 26<1> of the cam moves the roller 16 so far to the left that the clutch is disengaged and the roller 16 is no longer positively driven. The clutch is re-engaged during the forward movement by a compression spring mounted on the roller shaft. The spindles 30, Fig. 4, of the inking-rollers 9 are journalled in blocks 31 free to slide in inclined slots 32 in the sides of the carriage 10, and the blocks are retained in the slots by keepers 33, pivoted at 34 to the carriage and provided with adjusting-screws 35 bearing on the blocks 31. A compression spring 36 on a rod 37, which passes loosely through eyes 38 on the keepers, holds the latter in position, and the inking- rollers 9 may be adjusted accurately relative to the forme and rider 16 by means of the screws 35. The rider may be omitted, the two inking-rollers being geared together, and one being provided with a clutch, whereby the roller may be clutched to a gear positively driven from the rack 20 while passing over the forme, but disengaged therefrom while in contact with the distributing-drum.
