Abstract

483,431. Printing-machines. LINOTYPE & MACHINERY, Ltd., SPENCE, F., and JAKEMAN, J. W. June 8, 1937, No. 15921. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking - apparatus.-In a printing-machine of the kind having an impression cylinder and a reciprocatory bed, the ink being transferred to the bed or to a member associated therewith, the ink is conveyed from an ink duct to a plurality of preliminary distributing-rollers by means which include an oscillatory ductor roller, and subsequently passed from the preliminary distributing-rollers to a member which effects its further transfer towards the forme inking-rollers, means being provided to move a preliminary distributing- roller from its position of contact with the subsequent transfer member and thereby to break the passage of ink from the former to the latter, automatically and simultaneously with the operation of the tripping-mechanism of the machine. The slidable flat type bed b, power driven to reciprocate beneath the usual impression cylinder, has an extension table or slab c for receiving ink from a roll l<1> which is always in contact with a roll l, the latter being supplied with ink by an oscillating messenger roll i which takes up ink from a duct roll h rotating in an ink duct g. The roll l may be axially reciprocated, and is driven by gearing, its speed and direction of rotation being varied in accordance with the speed and direction of movement of the bed b. The ink applied on the slab c by the preliminary distributing-rolls l, l<1> is carried to the usual distributers e, f, and thereafter to the usual forme inking-rolls d (not shown), the latter being preferably arranged in pyramid formation and having two pairs of rolls arranged tangential with the plane of the forme. The rolls i, l contact when not rotating to prevent shock and undue wear, and the same applies to the rolls h, i. Means is provided whereby the roll l<1> is lifted away from the slab c but not out of contact with the roll l, and for preventing the rotation of the duct roll h. The roll l<1> is carried in blocks adjustable vertically by screws 4. Each screw 4 rests on a lever 5 secured to a shaft 7 rockable by a further lever 8, a rod 9, a bell-crank lever 10, 14, and a rod 12 which is pivoted to a lever secured on the trip shaft of the machine. A short lever 15 secured to the shaft 7 is adapted, when the latter is rocked by the trip shaft of the machine, to move a rod 16 to compress a spring 20 thereon. This spring moves a bell-crank lever 18 which draws down a cam plate controlling a feed-pawl which rotates the duct roll h. A spring 22 on the rod 16 returns the cam-plate upon release of the machine trip. The rod 9 is depressed by the arm 10 of the bell-crank lever 10, 14 engaging an adjustable sleeve 11 on the rod, and if this is lowered relatively to the rod the machine trip cannot rock the shaft 7 to lift the roll l<1> and stop the ink-feed means. The shaft 7 can be rocked without operating the machine trip by means of a pivoted screw-threaded rod 24, and a hand-wheel 25 which can be moved into engagement with the arm 14 of the bell-crank lever 10, 14. The axial reciprocations of the roll and those of the distributers f are 180‹ out of phase. Of the forme inking-rollers d (not shown), which engage the forme and slab c, the one most remote from the impression cylinder is raised as the bed b approaches completion of its stroke to avoid contact with the recently inked area of the slab c. This is effected by a cam at each side of the bed b engaging a roller on one end of a pivoted lever, the other end of the lever operating a pivoted bell-crank lever which engages a stop connected to the bearing of the roll d (not shown), to be lifted.
