Abstract
473,728. Printing-machines. ROGERS, H. G. Sept. 23, 1936, No. 25820. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1935. [Class 100 (ii)] Cylinder - machines ; driving printing - machines.- In a printing-machine of the kind in which a carriage carrying an impression cylinder and inking - rollers, reciprocates over a fixed type bed, the carriage is reciprocated by fluid pressure apparatus comprising outer tubes fixed to the carriage and inner tubes fixed to the stationary machine frame, the arrangement being such that as one pair of tubes is extended the other pair is collapsed. As shown, the machine comprises outer frames 1, 2, Fig. 3, and an inner frame 3 provided with guides 6 for a carriage 7 carrying the impression cylinder 8 and inking rollers 29, 30, 32, Fig. 4. The outer tubes 36, Figs. 3 and 13, and pairs of telescopic tubes 36, 37 are secured to the carriage 7 and the inner tubes 37 to the fixed frame. While one pair of tubes is expanded to move the carriage in one direction, the other pair is collapsed to exhaust the fluid therein and the supply and exhaust is controlled by a valve 40 the spindle of which carries an actuating arm 50 operated by the carriage 7 which, at the ends of its movements, strikes the upturned ends of a longitudinal rod 51 connected to the arm 50. The shaft of the cylinder 8 carries a loose gear 25 engaging a rack 24 on the frame 3, and adapted to be clutched to the shaft during the printing stroke of the carriage and to be declutched therefrom during the return movement. The clutch 26 for this purpose has an operating arm 60 which engages inclined projections 61, 62 on the frame 2. The cylinder bearers 22, which roll on guides 23 during the printing stroke, have flat portions which are presented to the guides during the return stroke so that the cylinder is not rotated by these bearers. The outer ends of the carriage 7 have inturned portions 7a engaging beneath the outer guides 6 to prevent lifting of the carriage, adjustable wedges being arranged between the portions 7a and the guides. Inking-apparatus.-The inking-apparatus on the carriage 7 comprises three drums 29 and distributing and inking rollers 30, 32. The drums are geared together by a gear 30a meshing with the rack 24 and their shafts are provided with swash plates 33, Fig. 12, engaging pivoted grooved posts 34 whereby the drums are reciprocated as they rotate. Impression adjustments.-The printing bed comprises upper and lower portions 11, 12, Figs. 3 and 4, having stepped inclined engaging portions for vertical adjustment. This adjustment is effected by a hand-actuated shaft 14 carrying a worm 15 engaging a worm wheel 16 on a screw 17 carrying a nut 18 housed between lugs 19 on the bed portion 10.
