[Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] High-frequency oscillations are generated by an electron stream caused cyclically to be deflected round a closed path, periodically interrupted and reflected. As shown, a cathode ray tube 10 comprises a cathode 11 surrounded by three deflecting electrodes 13 which are negatively biassed to concentrate the electron stream, a tubular anode 14 positively biassed from a source 23 and provided with a cap having radial segments 15 separated by gaps, and an electrode 16 operated at zero or negative potential relative to the cathode 11. The electrodes 13 are supplied with the three phases of a radio-frequency master-oscillator causing the beam to trace out a circular path, shown as a dotted line, on the segments 15. Those electrons which emerge from the spaces therebetween are decelerated by the electrode 16 and oscillate in the tube producing radiation which may be focused by a reflector 18. The anode 14 may form part of the envelope of the tube being provided with an external cooling fin 17. Modulating potentials may be supplied to the anode 14 from a transformer 19 in its biassing lead or to the electrode 16.
