Abstract

[Class 36.] In a telephone cable of the kind in which the stranded insulated conductors or groups of insulated conductors are secured together against relative displacement by adhesive means applied to the surface of the insulation of the conductors, the adhesive means is applied at spaced intervals along the cable and preferably also at points where the relative position of the conductors, or the spacing between them, is changed for balancing purposes. The adhesive means may comprise tapes or cords which are coated with adhesive material and which are wound helically about the conductors at the desired points, or the adhesion may be effected by a vulcanization process or by treatment of insulating coverings of the conductors with a heat-hardening adhesive material or with chemical solutions which interact to form a binding material. In one construction, conductor groups having conductors adhesively secured together at intervals are stranded into concentric layers, between which are applied helically, either continuously or intermittently, tapes having an adhesive coating on one or both sides.
