[Class 36] To eliminate torsional stresses in an armouring comprising stranded flat or wound wires 3, a flat or profiled wire 4 is wound over the armouring with a direction of lay opposite to that of the armouring wires and a sheath formed of jute or like strings 5 is stranded over the wire 4 with the same direction of lay as the armouring wires, but preferably with a shorter pitch. As shown, the armouring is applied to a cable having a lead sheath 1 surrounded by an insulating layer 2 of jute or like bands.
