Abstract

412,346. Cycle brakes. WHITMILL, W. H., 8, Coniston Road, Earlsdon, Coventry. March 3, 1933, No. 6484. [Class 136 (i).] In a rim brake for cycles, a U-shaped applying-member is formed of pivoted limbs, which are guided by parts interfitting therewith, one of the interfitting members being of channel section for this purpose. In the form shown, the U-shaped applying-member is formed of two limbs 2 of channel section pivotally connected together by means of hook-shaped ends 3, Fig. 2, having openings 4 to fit into grooves 5 in a cylindrical block 6, which is adapted for the connection of Bowden mechanism as by means of a tapped hole 7 to receive a hollow adjusting- screw 8 for the outer casing 9. The lower ends of the limbs 2 are pivoted at 10 to forked bellcrank levers 11, which carry the brake blocks and are pivoted on pins 12 projecting from supports 13 clipped to the cycle frame 14. On the supports 13 and between the forked parts of the bell-crank levers 11 are mounted curved sheet-metal &c. arms 15, which act as guides for the limbs 2. The arms 15 may be pivoted together at 17 to allow of adjustment to suit wheels of different widths, and are connected to the inner cable 18 of the Bowden mechanism, the brake being applied by downward movement of the limbs 2 under the action of the Bowden casing 9. In a modification, the guiding-arms 15 are formed in one piece with outwardly-opening channels to guide plain limbs 2 of the applying-member, which are given an upward pull by the Bowden cable to apply the brake.
