Abstract

409,795. Safety razors. GILLETTE SAFETY RAZOR CO., 15, West lst Street, Boston, U.S.A. Nov. 18, 1932, No. 32668. Convention date, May 7. [Class 30.] In a safety razor having folding blade-clamping sections 15, pivoted about their longitudinal edges 16 to a blade-support 10, as described in Specification 400,621, quick-acting means are provided for folding the sections over the blade 35 followed up by slowacting means to clamp and flex the blade. The quick-acting means comprise arms 27, on a rotatable handle-sleeve 24, engaging helical cam-slots 17 in the edges 16 of the clamping sections. The slow-acting clamping-means comprise a headed stem 30 riveted to an endknob 25 which has a frictional fit on the enlarged end 22 of an intermediate sleeve 21, fixed to the blade-supporting plate 10, and forming a bearing for the rotatable handle sleeve 24. The member 22 is split so as to be resilient and carries a screw-pin 23 engaging a cam slot 26 in the knob 25. By holding the handle 24 in one hand and rotating the knob 25 with the other, the razor head is rotated about the handle, through the frictional connection between members 22 and 25, to fold the clamping-sections 15 rapidly over the blade. The increased resistance then encountered causes the knob 25 to slip over the member 22 whereupon the pin-and-slot connection 23, 26 acts to retract the stem 30 and clamp the blade. The edges 16 of the clamping-sections 15 are spaced by a slot 19 from the remainder, to allow the blade-edges to protrude, and are grooved on their upper surface to provide guard teeth. The stem has a guide-collar 32, and, in a modification, a screw-thread between this collar and the sleeve 21 replaces the pin-andslot connection 23, 26. The blade is located on the plate 10 by diamond-shaped pegs 12 and it is flexed by the outer edges of the clamping- sections over the fulcrum edges of the flat supporting-plate with a power-multiplying lever action.
