4 Claims. (Cl. 30-605) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety razors of the type adapted to receive a thin flexible double-edge blade.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved hoe-type razor having a pair of rotatable blade clamping members which can be operated by twisting a part of the handle and which by novel structure will securely clamp a razor blade and lock it in position for shaving use.
Another object of the present invention proposes forming the safety razor with a tubular handle rod having its side walls cut to form a camming and locking groove for use with a removable handle pin to operate and lock the blade clamping members.
Still further, the present invention proposes constructing the razor with a solid handle rod having a camming and locking groove formed in it for operating and locking the blade clamping members.
As a further object, the present invention proposes providing a spring biased plunger at the blade clamping member engaging the end of the handle rod to assist in operating the blade clamping members.
The present invention further proposes the novel arrangement of a single head plate for simplicity of construction and a closed bottom head plate with blade clamping member pivoting bars for obtaining the advantages of a closed type structure without interfering with the operation of the blade clamping members.
Another object of the present invention is to provide blade clamping members each having a handle rod receiving groove with an end-locking lug at one end adjacent thereto and a positioning groove at other end opposite the locking lug.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel blade clamping member having end extensions to fully cover the width of a razor blade when in clamping position.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The safety razor, in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, has a hollow handle 20. A handle rod 21 extends through handle having a central portion 22 rotatable in the handle and an end portion 23 adapted to extend from the bottom of the handle. End portion 23 preferably is of the same outside diameter as the handle 20, both preferably being round in cross-section, and the central portion 22 is of smaller diameter. End portion 23 may be knurled as shown for ease in rotating the handle rod 21 in the handle 20.
A shank portion 24 of further reduced diameter is formed on the other end of the handle rod 21 with an end member 25 in the form of a rounded head. An abutment 26 is spaced from the end member 25 on the shank portion 24, the shank portion 27 of the handle rod 21 between the rounded head 25 and the handle rod abutment 26 being of still further reduced crosssection to form the handle rod abutment 26.
Central portion 22 of the handle rod 21 is tubular and a locking slot 28 with an inclined carnming slot 29 is formed in its walls, the inclined camming slot extending from the locking slot toward the end member 25.
Handle 20 has a pin opening 30 (Fig. 4) extending through one side wall, and a pin 31 removably extends through the pin opening 30 for engagement with the handle rod slots 28 and 29. Handle 20 also has a sleeve bracket 32 secured to its upper end.
A head plate 33 is removably secured to handle 20, the plate 33 being provided with screw holes 34 to receive screws 35 (Fig. 4) extending through sleeve bracket 32 on the handle 20.
Head plate 33 has a central opening 36 for the handle rod end member 25 and shank 24. Lateral slot openings 37 and 38 extend from the central opening 36 and a pair of blade clamping members 39 and 40 pivotally extend into the lateral slot openings 37 and 38 of the head plate.
Blade clamping members 39 and 40 have adjacent arcuately curved portions 41 and 42 each with a central opening 43 to pass the shank portion 27 of the handle rod 21, and abutment tongues 44 and 45 are provided on the blade clamping members. The abutment tongues 44 and 45 are adapted and positioned to underlie the end member or rounded head 25 of the handle rod 21 for rotating the blade clamping members 39 and 40 to open or blade-receiving position and to overlie the handle rod abutment 26 for closing the blade clamping members.

In the modified form of the invention illustrated by Figs. 14 and 15, a blade clamping member 69 is provided with a locking lug and rotation stop 70 at one end 71 and a positioning and locking groove 72 at the other end 73. A pair of suchmembers are used, the
two being similarly. constructed except thatthe groove 72 of one clamping member is disposed opposite the lug 70 of the other clamping member;
