Patented Nov. 24, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VIBRATORY RAZOR Alvin Hayes Crisp, Moscow, Idaho Application October 30, 1950, Serial No. 192,838
4 Claims.
1 The present invention relates to improvements in razors, and more particularly to the type of razor which is provided with a vibrator whereby the shaving action will be greatly improved.
An object of the present invention is to'provide a novel structure for holding a double edge conventional razor blade and wherein a vibrator is provided for flexing the razor blade to effect more eificient cutting by the edges of the blade during shaving.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel arrangement whereby the razor blade is detachably secured to the handle of the razor and wherein novel latching means are provided for effecting the detachable securing of the razor blade within the razor blade holder.
Still other objects or the present invention are to provide such means that are simple in construction, economical of manufacture and readily assembled. I
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent from the detailed description to follow. The best form in whichI have contemplated applying my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the razor with parts in section;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the upper arcuated plate showing a razor blade mounted thereon; v
Figure 3 is a, transverse sectional view taken substantially along theplane of line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken substantially along the plane of line 4--4 hollow portion 28 in which a solenoid 22 is provided, the solenoid 22 being of conventional form as is common in vibrators. The handle I4 has a reduced extension portion 24 which is axially bored at 26.
The holder means 16 for the razor blade 28 is comprised of a pair of arcuated plates 30 and 32 which are disposed in opposing relation to each other. The outer plate 30 is provided with a pair of downwardly extending flat elements 34 and 36 which are adapted to pass through cut outs in the conventional razor blade 28 and extend through slots in the lower arcuated plate 32 at 38 and at 40. Each of the downwardly extending flat elements 34 and 36 is provided with a cam slot 42. The lower arcuated plate 32 is substantially of conventional form having the outer longitudinally extending lip portion 44 for overlying the sharp edges of the razor blade 28. The outer arcuated plate 30 is also provided with a centrally disposed pin 46 which is adapted to extend through the cut out of the razor blade 28 at the central portion thereof.
A plunger 48 is reciprocably disposed within the bore 26 of the handle I4 and has a lower end portion reciprocably disposed within the solenoid 22 for vibration thereby. The plunger 48 is provided with a pair of metallic disks 50 and 52 on either side of the rubber ring 54 for maintaining the plunger 48 in axial alignment within the handle I 4. The outer end of the plunger 48 is provided with an enlarged head portion 56 which has an arcuated surface 58 for engagement with the under side of the razor blade 28. The enlarged head 56 is also provided with a recess 68 for receiving the pin 46 of the outer arcuated plate 30. As seen best in Figure 3, the plunger 48 has a squared portion 62 for cooperation with a non-circular bore extension 64 of the handle [4. Thus, the plunger 48 will be maintained in desired relation to the, arcuated plates 30 and 32 so that the arcuated surface 58 will engage the razor blade 28 as desired.
Looking now at Figures 3 and 4, it will be seen that the latching means I8 is comprised of a bushing 66 having an outer knurled surface, the bushing 66 being rotatably disposed on the reduced handle portion 24. The bushing 66 is provided with an annular flange portion 68 to which a pair of latch bars 18 and 12 are pivotally secured, as at 14 and 16 by the pin. Each of the latch bars 18 and 12 is provided with an elongated slot 18 and 80. A pair of pins 82 and 84 are secured to the under side of the arcuated plate 32 and extend downwardly through the elongated slot 18 and 80. The outer ends of the latch bars 10 and 12 are arcuated at 86 and 88 for engagement within the cam slots 42.
From the foregoing description, taken in con- Junction with the drawings, it is believed that the operation of the razor will be readily apparent to one skilled in the art. When the vibrator 22 is actuated, the plunger 48 will be rapidly reciprocated by the flexing of the razor blade 28 so that the cutting edges will rapidly reciprocate to improve the cutting action thereby.
When it is desired to change the razor blade, the bushing 66 is rotated so that the latch bars and 12 are removed from engagement with the cam slots 42, The outer arcuated plate may then be removed and a new blade inserted. After the outer arcuated plate is replaced, the bushing may be rotated in the opposite direction to effect latching of the razor for further use.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A razor comprising a hollow handle, razor blade holding means having opposing upper and lower reversely arcuated plates, said lower plate being secured to said handle, a solenoid disposed in said handle, a plunger disposed in said handle and vibrated by said solenoid, an enlarged head on said plunger of substantially the same length as said blade holding plates and having spaced slots therein, said head being disposed between said plates, latch means detachably securing said plates together whereby a razor blade may be inserted between said plates and be engaged by said head, said latch means comprising spaced downwardly extending flat lugs having cam. slots there,- on depending from said upper plate and through said slots in said head, complemental slots in said lower plate through which said elements extend, and .further means associated with said handle, lower plate and cam slots for securing said plates together.
2. A razor comprising a hollow handle, razor blade holding means having opposing upper and lower reversely arcuated plates, said lower plate being secured to said handle, a solenoid disposed in said handle, a plunger disposed in said handle and vibrated by said solenoid, an enlarged head on said plunger of substantially the same length as said blade holding plates and having spaced slots therein, said head being disposed between said plates, latch means detachably securing said plates together'whereby a razor blade may bev inserted between said plates and be engaged by said head, said latch means comprising spaced downwardly extending fiat lugs having cam slots thereon depending from said upper plate and through said slots in said head, complemental slots in said lower plate through which said elements extend, and further meansassociated with said handle, lower plate and cam slots for securing said plates together, said further means including a bushing rotatably mounted on said handle, spaced slotted arms pivoted to said bushing, depending lugs on said lower plate guidingly engaging said arms by means of the slots therein, end portions of said arms engaging the cam slots of the downwardly extending elements upon rotation of said bushing thereby securing said plates together.
3. .In a safety razor and vibrator combination, a guard plate and a clamping plate, a razor blade detachably secured therebetween, a vibrator having a vibrating head disposed between said plates, said head engaging said blade along substantially the entire length of said blade, latching means detachably connecting said guard and clamping plates and being free of said vibrating head, said latching means comprising spaced downwardly depending lugs in said clamping plate, corresponding slots on said vibrating head and guard plate receiving said lugs, cam slots on the lower end .of each lug and means engaging said cam slots holding Said plates o ether,
4. .In a safety razor and vibrator combination, a guard plate] and a. clamping plate adapted to receive. a, razor blade therebetween, a vibrator including a vibrating head adapted to engage the undersurface of a razor blade disposed between the plates, said vibrating head being disposed between said plates and having its ends terminating adjacent the ends of said plates, latching means detachably connecting said guard and clamping plates and being free of said vibrating head, said latching means comprising Spaced, w dly d pe ding l o s c amping plate, s e dp at and s id h ad, in p vided with aligned slots, receiving said lugs therethrough, the lower end ojeaoh lug having a cam slot opening into, the edge. thereof and mea s. engaged in each cam slot holdin said ,plates. together.
