Abstract

Aqueous solutions containing hydrogen peroxide are stabilized either by adding to the solution a small amount of a soluble metal stannate, e.g. sodium stannate, and adjusting the pH of the solution to at least 3,5 or by adding a small amount of soluble metal stannate and a small amount of a peptizing agent and adjusting the pH of the solution to at least 2,0. Peptising agents giving rise to polyvalent negative ions such as pyrophosphoric acid or soluble pyrophosphates are referred to. The amount of soluble metal stannate may be 5--100 mg. per litre of solution. A pH of 4--5 is preferable. The soluble metal stannate may be added in the form of an aqueous solution and the stabilizing action is improved if the sodium stannate solution is treated to effect a partial hydrolysis with incipient precipitation before its addition. The partial hydrolysis may be effected for example by allowing the solution to stand for a few days, by heating, by the action of carbon dioxide or by the action of sodium bicarbonate. Examples are given. The use of acetanilide as a stabilizer for hydrogen peroxide is also referred to.
