[Class 37.] A variable resistance of the type comprising rods of different lengths which dip into a conducting fluid forming part of the circuit of an electric measuring instrument, has groups of contact rods b connected to tappings on resistance coils r and dipping into a fluid n, the rods b being arranged in concentric groups at different heights or forming spirally arranged contacts, a centrally-disposed liquid-displacing member s being shaped to compensate for variations in the crosssectional area of the conducting liquid as the number of contact rods in engagement therewith varies. The rods b are carried by a disc a on which are mounted resistance spools serving to locate the contact rods. Specification 184,757, [Class 40 (i)], is referred to.
