Abstract
A loose bituminized stone material for road making is made by coating hot broken stone, chippings &c. with hot bituminous material, preferably a hard bitumen, and after the mass has cooled to approximately the drop point of the bituminous material adding a separating material, e.g. flue dust. Only a small quantity of separating material, e.g. 3 per cent, is required. The laying of the material is effected by treating it, preferably in a mixer, with a solvent, comprising, for instance, a solution of two parts of bitumen or tar in one part of benzene, which not only softens the bituminous coating but also bituminizes the separating material. The drop point is determined by Ubbelohde's method and corresponds to the temperature at which a drop falls out of a small copper vessel. It usually lies 15-30 DEG C. above the softening point determined by the Krämer-Sarnow method.
