[Class 106 (ii).] In apparatus for measuring the axial thrust of single thrust blocks, the measuring devices, manometer, and charging device are all mounted on a non-rotary thrust member, and are connected in a closed pressure system, each measuring device comprising a cylinder the piston in which is moved by a fluid-operated diaphragm to take up its share of the axial thrust, and a protective diaphragm for closing the cylinder. The thrust of the collar on the shaft is taken by a non-rotary horse-shoe collar s. Three measuring devices are arranged in the collar concentrically of the shaft and connected together and to a manometer by the pipe b in a closed pressure system. A charging device is provided for supplying the system with pressure fluid, for instance, glycerine. Fig. 3 shows the construction of each measuring device. A diaphragm e of rubber is held clamped in a housing g by means of a ring f. Housing and ring form a cylinder in which slides a piston k having a projecting pressure head r. The cylinder is closed by a protecting diaphragm i. When the system is not charged the head r lies inside the surface of the collar s. The pipe b communicates with a gauge and screw pump. To charge the device, the inlet valve to pressure supply is opened and the pump piston screwed back to fill the pump cylinder. This valve is now closed and a pressure valve opened to the device whereupon the return of the piston will charge the system with fluid to distend the diaphragm e. until the heads r of the pistons k project beyond the surface of the collar s until they make contact with a stationary part of the block and take up axial thrust of the block. The pressure on the heads will be indicated by the gauge. To render the device inoperative, both pump valves are opened together.
