Abstract
408,370. Treatment of growing plants; implements for working land. STRANZ F. SCHRODER-, 10, Flemmingstrasse, Steglitz, Berlin. Nov. 14, 1932, No. 32178. Convention date, Oct. 17. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 15, 1933.] [Classes 6 (i) and 6 (ii).] A machine for pressing growing plants deeper into the soil consists of a transportable frame adapted to be drawn over the plants and on which elements are mounted which grip the plants from above and press them vertically downwards. Each of these elements or rams terminates in diverging prongs 14 which on descending first move soil inwards before pressing the plant downwards, and on ascending move the soil slightly as they rise. The rams may be made of rubber &c. Planted strips of land may alternate with unplanted strips on which the machine wheels may run. The rams 13, Fig. 6, are arranged in a cross-head 15 with springs 16 tending to lift them. They are pressed downwards periodically by projections 25 on a drum 19 driven from the rear wheels 22 by a chain 24. In a modified machine the rams 13 are reciprocated vertically by one or more cranks and are movable longitudinally of the machine by cams and springs so that they are not moved in the direction of travel of the machine while in the ground. In another modification the rams are mounted in rows on a frame linked to one of a pair of cranked axles which are coupled together and rotate with the travelling wheels, the lower end of the link being connected by a long slotted link with a pin on the rod coupling the axles together. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 12 the rams 13 are pivoted on pins 42 mounted in a circle between discs 43 keyed on the axle of the ground wheels mounted in a frame 47, the pivotal movements of the rams being limited by abutments 46. The rams may be mounted on a soilloosening machine, or soil-loosening implements may be mounted on the machines described. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the following method of cultivating cereal plants. The seeds are strewn thinly directly on the surface of the ground and then immediately covered with a layer of loose soil, turf, humus or the like, which is wholly or partly removed after the seeds have germinated. When adventitious roots develop they may be covered with crumbled soil, and later on the plants are earthed up. The ground may be levelled after the plants have been pressed deeper into the soil. Some of the soil around plants in drills may be removed, before treatment, by forming furrows besides the rows and then harrowing or levelling. Seeds may be strewn at the bottoms of furrows and soil for forming the loose layer and for earthing up may be taken from between the furrows. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
