Abstract
Catalysts for the hydration of olefines comprise ferric metaphosphate together with the metaphosphate of a divalent metal such as magnesium, cadmium, alkaline earth metals, ferrous iron, copper, or nickel. The proportions may be one or two molecules of ferric metaphosphate to one molecule of the divalent metal metaphosphate. In an example, one molecular proportion each of ferrous oxalate and ferric oxide are treated with 8 molecular proportions of aqueous orthophosphoric acid, and the mixture is evaporated to dryness and heated up to 300 DEG C.ALSO:The hydration of olefines is effected in the presence of catalysts which comprise ferric metaphosphate together with the metaphosphate of a divalent metal such as magnesium, cadmium, alkaline earth metals, ferrous iron, copper or nickel. The proportions may be one or two molecules of ferric metaphosphate to one molecule of the divalent metal metaphosphate. The hydration reaction is preferably effected in the vapour phase, for instance at 250--300 DEG C. and 100 atmospheres pressure or more, and the olefine is preferably in large excess. In an example, one molecular proportion each of ferrous oxalate and ferric oxide, are treated with 8 molecular proportions of aqueous orthophosphoric acid, and the mixture is evaporated to dryness and heated up to 300 DEG C. Ethylene and steam at partial pressures of 70 and 30 atmospheres respectively are passed over this catalyst at 290 DEG C.
