Abstract

408,042. Fabrics composed of agglutinated fibrous materials. MOULDED HAIR CO., Ltd., 20, Copthall Avenue, and HOWARD, J. A., 1, Palace Road, Streatham Hill, both in London. Nov. 4, 1932, No. 31130. [Class 140.] Lengths of upholstery padding of the kind described in Specification 341,936, composed of fibres such as horse hair held together in a loosely associated open condition by an adhesive such as rubber deposited from latex, are made by introducing the fibres into the upper end of a space between opposed approximately parallel downwardly travelling lengths of a pair of wide belts, a sheet of interlocked fibres emerging from the bottom of the space. The lengths of belting may be convergent downwards at the upper feeding end. Latex may be applied to the fibres before being fed into the machine or to the formed sheet, with or without previous treatment with a coagulant. Suitable apparatus comprises a pair of endless belts a led around upper and lower pairs of rollers b, d mounted on frames c adjustably spaced apart by slotted brackets e and bolts f, the belts a being supported at the rear by boards c<1>. The belts a are driven by a crank k operating through the rollers b, spur wheels g and pinions h. In starting the machine a previously formed web or other support is provided as a lodgment for the fibres. The fibres may be dried by directing hot air between the belts by hood-like nozzles n. After vulcanization the web may be cut or stamped out into upholstery pads.
