Abstract

407,931. Lathes. HOLBROOK, R. E., 44, Martin Street, Stratford, London. Sept. 17, 1932, No. 25912. [Class 83 (iii).] A lathe spindle has a drive such that when operative it imparts end thrust to the spindle which is taken up and the spindle automatically centred by a bearing having a taper surface coaxial with the spindle and making line or surface contact with a tapered part or parts adapted to rotate with the spindle. The lathe spindle 1, carried by a pair of oppositely disposed tapered roller bearings, is rotated by single helical gearing 12, 13 which imparts end thrust to the spindle in one direction on forward rotation and in the opposite direction on reverse rotation, the thrust is directed against one of the two bearings and acts to wedge the rollers 3 between the inner and outer races thus centralizing the spindle. The bearings may be adjusted by the screwed ring 9 acting through the cover plate 8.
