[Class 59.] In a grinding or crushing apparatus in which the material is pulverized between a stamp 1 and anvil 3, Fig. 1, the stamp is fixed on a rotary shaft 2 and is also given a vertical reciprocating movement owing to the centrifugal effect of an unbalanced mass 5 that is adjustably mounted on a disc 4 secured to the shaft 2. At one end the shaft 2 is supported, with a slight permissible degree of rocking movement, in a self-aligning bearing 8, and at the other end in a bearing 7 which is vertically slidable in guides 9. Thus, as the shaft is driven by the belt-wheel 11, the bearing 7 and consequently the stamp 1 rises and falls once during each revolution of the disc 4. According to a modification, Fig. 3, the unfixed end of the shaft 2 may be supported in a strap 20 at the end of an arm 21 oscillatable in a bracket 22. The material is fed to the anvil down an inclined chute, the rotation of the stamp assisting the feed and throwing the material clear on the opposite side of the anvil. In addition, the shaft 2 may have imparted to it an axial movement, for example, by the mechanism shown in Fig. 4, in which a collar 35 on the shaft is disposed between two apertured discs 30, 31, the latter of which is acted upon by a return spring 36<a> and the former of which is actuated from the wheel 11 through pin 43, rocking arm 42, pawl 40 carried thereby, ratchet wheel 39, link 37 and toggle 36.
