In the use of machines of the class referred to, difiiculty has arisen from the accidental inclusion with the material to bepulverized of unbreakable fragmentssuch as metallic Safety devices have heretoforebeen provided wherein, by the excessive strains occasioned by contact of the rotor withsuch unbreakable objects, the actuating power devices areautomatically disconnected from the rotor thereby preventing further injury to. the machine. These devices have been unsatisfactory because of the shocks and strain arising from the inertia of the rotor and the time required for the action of dental strains above described.
These and other objects will appear in the following specification reference being had to the accompanying drawings of which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine built in accordance with my present invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the end of the machine illustrated in Fig. 1 remote from the power connection whereby the machine is actuated.

The preferred embodiment of -my invention comprises a base frame 1 of generally to cause the revolution of the rotor.

In a pulverizing machine, the combination with a casing enclosing the pulverizing chamber, of a rotor rotatable within the chamber, aibreaker plate positioned at the forward side of the chamber pivotally supported at its upper endand adapted to cooperate with said rotor to pulverize material fed thereto, an arm positioned behind the T reaker plate pivotally attached to said casing at its upper end, means releasable by a predetermined pressure upon the breaker plate to attach the lower end of said arm to the casing, a spring interposed between said too as and for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the class described, a rotor, a breaker plate for cooperation therewith, means to maintain said breaker plate in constant operative relation to said rotor under normal working conditions, said means being adapted to yield to permit the passage of small unbreakable particles between the rotor and plate, and means entirely releasable to permit the movement of the plate to inoperative position relative to the rotor upon the entrance between the two elements of larger ubreakable fra ments.
11. In a pulverizing machine. arotor, at breaker plate for cooperation with said rotor, an abutment behind said breaker plate, cushioning means between said abutment and said plate, means for altering the distance between said abutment and plate to regulate said cushioning means, and means for moving said abutment to adjust said plate relative to said rotor.
12. In a pulverizing machine. a rotor, a breaker plate for cooperation with said rotor. an abutment behind said breaker plate, cushioning means between said abutment and said plate, means for altering the distance between said abutment and plate to regulate said cushioning means, means for moving said abutment to adjust said plate relative to said rotor, and means yieldable at a predetermined pressure for securing said abutment in determined position relative to said rotor.

In a pulverizing machine, a rotor, a breaker plate pivotally supported in operative relation to said rotor. an abutment member extending across and behind said breaker plate, said abutment member being pivotally mounted at one end, cushioning means between said abutment member and said plate, adjustable means connecting said abutment member and said plate for altering the distance between them and thereby regulating said cushioning means, and adjustable means for securing the other end of said abutment member with said plate in adjusted position relative to said rotor.
14:. In a pulverizing machine, a rotor, at breaker plate pivotally supported in operative relation to said rotor, an abutment member extending across and behind said breaker plate, said abutment member being pivotally mounted at one end, cushioning means between said abutment member and said plate, adjustable means connecting said abutment member and said plate for altering the distance between them and thereby regulating said cushioning means, and adjustable means for securing the other end of said abutment member with said plate in adjusted position relative to said rotor, the mounting means for said abutment member including means frangible at a predetermined pressure.
15. In a machine of the class described, a rotor, a breaker plate for cooperation with said rotor, an abutment plate, a compression spring interposed between said plate and abutment, a bolt and nut for adjustably limiting the action of said spring, and means operable to adjust the abutment and therewith the plate toward and away from the rotor.
16. In a machine of the class described, a rotor, a breaker plate for cooperation with said rotor, an abutment plate, a compression spring interposed between said plate and abutment, a bolt'and nut for adjustably limitin the action of said spring, and means frangible under predetermined stress for securing the abutment in adjusted position.
