Abstract
407,727. Type-bar-making machines. LINOTYPE MACHINERY, Ltd., 9, Kingsway, London, and CEUPPENS, M., 34, Rue Joseph Coosemans, Brussels. Sept. 23, 1932, No. 26464. [Class 100 (iii).] Matrices.-In typebar-making machines adapted to produce slugs with type characters overhanging the slug bodies, those matrices which are used for casting characters having no ascenders are modified in that the recess which is provided with the character-forming surface is widened at the side adjacent the top of the character so as to produce a metal fillet which extends more or less across the top of the slug and unites the overhanging and body portions of the slug. The formative cavity 3 of the matrix 1, Fig. 8, for producing an overhung slug is offset relatively to the mould slot 4 but in order to avoid a weakness at the junction of the parts 5, 5<a>, Fig. 6, of the resulting slug, when the matrices are for non-ascender characters, the wall of the recess 3 of such matrices is splayed outwards as shown at 6 so that the slug produced will have its non-ascender characters united to the body 5 by a fillet of metal 5<c>.
