Abstract
Basic porphins, capable of yielding water-soluble salts with strong mineral acids, are prepared by treating porphins containing a carboxyl or esterified carboxyl group with a basic compound of the formula <FORM:0407486/IV/1> wherein A represents an alcoholic hydroxyl group or an amino or substituted amino group, (CHy)x denotes a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic straight or branched chain, and R1 and R2 stand for hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or oxyalkyl groups. The porphin starting material may be in the hydrogenated or oxidized form or as a metal compound and the basic compound may be in the form of the alcoholate or salt. Examples are given of the interaction of (1) methyl-phaeophorbide and asymmetrical diethylaminoethylenediamine, diethylaminoethanol or ethylenediamine; (2) phaeophorbide and asymmetrical diethylaminoethylenediamine; (3) protoporphyrin dimethylester and asymmetrical diethylaminoethylenediamine; (4) haematoporphyrin and diethylaminoethanol; (5) phylloporphyrin or pyrroporphyrin and diethylaminoethanol; (6) the methyl ester of phylloporphyrin or pyrroporphyrin and asymmetrical diethylaminoethylenediamine; (7) the copper salt of methylphaeophorbide and asymmetrical diethylaminoethylenediamine; (8) the iron salt of phylloporphyrin methylester and diethylaminoethanol; (9) phaeophytin and triethanolamine and subsequently heating with copper acetate; (10) chlorin E or rhodin G with diethylaminoethanol; (11) haemin (chlorhaemin of protoporphyrin) or the iron salt of tetramethyl-haematoporphyrin and diethylaminoethanol; (12) the dimethylester of rhodoporphyrin or protoporphyrin and asymmetrical diethylaminoethylenediamine. Specification 304,731, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the use of basic compounds of the above formula in which R1 and R2 represent alkylamino or halogenalkyl groups or belong to a heterocyclic ring. Catalysts may be present, such as small quantities of water or of metal salts, e.g. copper or zinc acetate. An example is also included of the interaction of phaeophorbide with diethylaminoethanol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
