407,197. Thermostats. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MACHINERIEEN - EN APPARATEN FABRTEKEN, 30, Croeselaan, Utrecht, Holland. March 16, 1933, No. 8019. Convention date, April 22, 1932. [Class 64 (ii).] An apparatus for actuating a mechanically movable member 8 in response to variations in the intensity of radiated heat comprises a black strip 1 enclosed in a vacuum vessel 2 and directly connected to the member 8, and a second polished, but otherwise similar, strip 7 also connected to the member 8. The vessel 2 is highly evacuated in order to reduce the heat leaking from the strip 1 and to cause the radiant heat absorbed bv the strip to raise its temperature as much as possible above that of strip 7. As the strip 1 is sealed through the glass of vessel 2 at both ends, a bellows section 5 is provided to enable the vessel to vary in length with the strip. Instead of using thermal elements comprising strips expanding linearly, bimetallic strips may be used. Alternatively black and polished bulbs connected by a tube and containing a volatile liquid may be mounted on a balance beam. The higher temperature of the black bulb causes an accumulation of liquid in the polished one and thus the beam is tipped and the desired control actuated. The black body may be supported in the vacuum vessel by thin wires or on points. The vacuum vessel itself may be used as the comparison body 7.
