Abstract
441,579. Thermostats. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MACHINERIEEN-EN APPARATEN FABRIEKEN MEAF, 30, Croeselaan, Utrecht, Holland. Dec. 22, 1934, Nos. 36859, 36860, 36861, and 36862. Convention dates, Dec. 22, 1933, May 18, 1934, Nov. 8, 1934, and Nov. 8, 1934. Addition to 407,197. [Class 64 (ii)] A switching device controlled by radiated energy as in the parent Specification includes a heat sensitive element 1 within a double-walled tube 2<11>, the enclosed space 4 between the walls being evacuated. The inner tube 2<1> is blackened on its outer surface to absorb radiation. Stoppers 5 are provided to prevent loss of heat from the space containing the wire 1, and the exposed ends of the wire 1 may be of heat insulating material. The tube 2<1> may be more rapidly heated by radiation if placed in the focal line of a parabolic cylindrical mirror 51. These conditions are approximately attained by arranging the tube 2<1> eccentrically in the tube 2<11>, which has a reflecting coating at 6. The variations in length of the wire 1 are used to initiate switching operations. In place of blackening, the tube 2<1> may be coated with a substance having a low absorption and emission in the infra-red region, e.g. silica, tungsten, copper, gold and platinum. The coating may be on the wire 1. Photo-electric coatings may also be used, e.g., caesium, or potassium hydride, or oxide of copper, nickel or iron. Alternatively, the inner tube may be of metal with an oxide or sulphide coating.
