457,750. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Aug. 10, 1936, No. 22038. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] [See also Group XX] An X-ray tube, for irradiating cavities of the body, is mounted partly within a flexible high tension cable, so that the mechanical connection between the tube and cable is effected without additional insulating terminal parts. The projecting part of the tube is about the same diameter as the cable. The tube comprises a cylindrical metal part 1 provided at its end with a glass window 5, and a funnel-shaped glass extension 2. The anode 7, which may be formed of tungsten, is supported by a metal tube 8, connected by a glass tube 9 covered with a thin metal coating, to a metal tube 6 secured to the end of the glass funnel. The glass portion 9 prevents transmission of heat to the cable and its covering acts as a protective resistance. The tube 6 has a pump connection 23 sealed thereto and the tube is exhausted through an aperture 24 in the tube 8. The anode 7 is mounted on a pin 12 of reduced thermal capacity carrying a shield 13 to prevent backward radiation. A heated cathode 14 is carried by supports 15, two of which serve as leads. The tube is surrounded bv a metal sheath 18 connected to the earthed sheath of the cable and provided with a celluloid cap 28. A metal sleeve 25 secured inside the cable by expanding the core 26 by a screw 27 connects the tube 26 with the conductor 16.
