Abstract
491,390. Thermal switches. METALS & CONTROLS CORPORATION. Dec. 28, 1936, No. 35555. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] A thermostatically controlled switch has the essential parts including a rod 18 connecting the thermal element with. the switch enclosed in a hermetically-sealed envelope comprising upper and lower casings 26, 5 hermetically connected by a tube 17 containing the rod 18. The envelope may be evacuated or filled with argon, helium, nitrogen or other gas at a suitable pressure. In the form shown in the Figure, which is adapted for attachment to the cooling unit of a refrigerator, a corrugated cupped bimetallic disc 9 acts through the rod 18 on a contact spring 30 moving this away from a fixed contact 48 or allowing it to engage it. In modifications the temperatures of operation are adjusted by a screw bearing through a sealed bellows arrangement on the contact spring, Fig. 7 (not shown), or on a spring arm bearing on the bimetallic disc, Figs. 12-15 (not shown). In another modification, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), adjustment is provided for by making the contact spring 30 bimetallic and heating it an adjustable amount by a heating coil.
