Abstract
407,006. Reaping and mowing machines. NICHOLSON, A. C., Trent Iron Works, Newark-on-Trent. Sept. 3, 1932, Nos. 24618 and 24648. [Class 6 (iii).] To prevent dirt accumulating under the lower set of knives in a reaping or mowing machine having two co-operating sets of knives one set being reciprocatable relatively to the other which is usually stationary and which may be moved longitudinally over the faces on the finger bar that normally support it, means are provided to withhold positively the knives of the lower set at their front and rear extremities from upward movement and a transverse gap or clearance opening may be provided across the faces of the fingers. In the form shown in Fig. 5 the forward end of each knife 10 of the lower set enters a groove 13 in its cooperating finger 3 and the bar 12, to which the knives are secured, is dovetailed to fit a correspondingly shaped recess and so prevents rising of the rear end of the knife. The dovetailed recess may be formed in the cutter bar 1 or may be cut in the finger. The bar 12 may be rectangular in cross-section being held down then by an overhanging part of the rubbing plates 5 or other devices. Spaces may be provided between the individual knives or group of knives to permit dirt to work to the rear the sides of such spaces being inclined, curved or serrated in plan and the edges undercut. In a modified method of preventing dirt from accumulating under the blades a transverse clearance opening 16 is provided below the blades ; this opening may be extended as shown at 17. A gap is also preferably provided between the two knife bars to allow dirt to work out. To lock the stationary set of knives against accidental movement a fixed stop 23, Fig. 7, is provided at the outer end of the cutter mechanism against which the end of the knife bar 12 abuts : this stop is preferably undercut and the knife bar end correspondingly chamfered. The bar is held pressed up against the stop by a lever 24 that is moved by an adjusting screw 26. In the second Provisional Specification the stationary set of knives is stated to be held locked by a bolt passing through holes in the knife bar and the frame or by a latch ; the stationary knives may be made in sections or instead of a knife bar with blades secured to it the knife bar and blades may be stamped out of a piece of steel, a longitudinal corrugation taking the place of the knife bar.
