Abstract
405,960. Controlling change speed gearing. WILSON, A. G., 23, Queen Anne's Gate, London. May 5, 1932, No. 2885/34. Divided on 405,664. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to means for braking and holding stationary reaction drums in change-speed epicyclic gearing especially of the Wilson type and as applied to vehicles. Brake shoes 53 are supported on the ends of levers 57 pivoted at a distance from the periphery of the drum 1 to be braked less than the length of the levers so that the shoes 53 jam or stub against the drum with effective stopping action. A balanced braking is applied by admitting fluid under pressure from the same source behind pistons 54 connected to the levers 57 severally by rods 56. Thus when a control cam 50 is turned to the position shown, liquid or gas under pressure, or suction, at a supply pipe 51 is admitted simultaneously by two pipes 44 to cylinders 55 in which the pistons 54 slide. To free the drum 1, the cam 50 is turned back upon which a spring 48 thrusts a slide valve 46 to the left so as to connect the pipes 44 to exhaust at 52.
