Abstract

405,799. Gas meters. SUTHERLAND, A. G., and SUTHERLAND, Ltd., A. G., Warwick Road, Grect, Birmingham. Feb. 6, 1933, No. 3547. [Class 54.] The valves 1, 2 of a dry gas meter are moved in arcuate paths over grids 3, 4 formed with gas ports by levers engaged by a crank shaft rotated by the bellows, so that, apart from the engaging surfaces of the valves and grids and the engaging surfaces of the levers and the crankshaft, the only surfaces offering direct frictional resistance to the movement of a valve and members directly connected therewith are those of the single bearing by which the valve and lever are connected to the meter casing. Fig. 1 shows one construction in which the valves are actuated by bell-crank levers 6, 7 which are pivoted on bearing pins 13, 13a and have slotted ends 8, 9 engaging cranks 10, 11 on a shaft rotated from the flag spindles 20, 20a. In another construction the valves are secured at their narrow ends to links pivoted to the casing, and at their broad ends to slotted levers engaging the crank shaft. In a further construction shown in Fig. 5 the valves 1, 2 are hinged to levers 51, 53 which are pivoted on bearing pins 56a, 56 and are slotted at 50, 52 to engage a single crank 49 on the crank shaft. The connection between the valves 1, 2 and levers 51, 53 is rigid in the plane of normal operation of the valves. A bar 59 extending above the valves prevents the valves from jumping off the grids.
