Abstract
Iodine compounds of silver, copper, titanium, tin, manganese, nickel, or cobalt are used as catalysts in the heat treatment with hydrogenating gases of distillable carbonaceous materials. The catalysts may be employed with the addition of compounds of metals of Groups 2--8 of the periodic system particularly oxides, hydroxides, or sulphides of the metals of Groups 5 and 6 or compounds of copper, silver, zinc, tin, cadmium, manganese, uranium, rhenium, nickel, cobalt, lithium, magnesium, aluminium, or silicon. Nitrides, phosphides, borides, arsenides, and selenides also form suitable additions. Carriers and dispersing agents may also be used, e.g. active carbon, silica gel, pumice stone, or porous sherds of burned fire clay. The catalyst may be employed in a colloidal state. Middle oil vapours are passed at 440 DEG C. and 200 atmospheres pressure with hydrogen over a mixture of tungsten sulphide with copper or tin iodides. The product contains 60 per cent of benzine having a high anti-knock ratio. Aromatic hydrocarbons are similarly obtained by treating benzines at 550 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst comprising molybdic acid, zinc oxide, and silver, titanium, or nickel iodides. Pit coal mixed with heavy oil is similarly treated in presence of tin iodate. The said treatment with hydrogenating gases includes destructive hydrogenation and the removal of sulphur and oxygen containing impurities from hydrocarbons and the hydrogenation of p unsaturated hydrocarbons to form aromatic and hydroaromatic hydrocarbons.ALSO:Iodine compounds of silver, copper, titanium, tin, manganese, nickel or cobalt are used as catalysts in the production of hydrocarbons by treating organic compounds containing oxygen or sulphur, e.g. phenol or cresols, with hydrogenating gases.
