Abstract

<PICT:0405038/III/1> The separation of suspended matter from oils is promoted by use of a coagulant sol which has been activated by passage therethrough of a direct or alternating electric current. The coagulant may be an alkaline suspension of amylaceous material, as described in Specification 405,262. An aqueous suspension of starch is prepared in a tank 10 fitted with a circulating pump 12 and steam coils 11. The starch suspension and a solution of sodium hydroxide are drawn respectively from tanks 16, 10, 13 through valves 14, 15 to a mixing tank 16, and passed thence through a U-tube 18 provided with electrodes 19, 20. Hydrogen given off at the electrode 19 escapes through a pipe 21, and oxygen is carried forward with the suspension from the electrode 20 into a tank 23, where the suspension is mixed with the liquid under treatment by a motor-driven agitator 25. Impurities separate from the liquid in a settling-tank 27.
