Abstract

<PICT:0399826/IV/1> <PICT:0399826/IV/2> In purifying for re-use water which has been used for washing wool or other textiles the water is subjected to a vacuum in order to promote the separation of suspended impurities. The treatment by vacuum may be preceded by treatment with sodium carbonate or lime or by treatment with acid, sometimes followed by treatment with barium aluminate. When acid is used alkali is finally added to neutralize. Such chemical treatment is stated to fix detergent or emulsifying constituents on the suspended impurities. Adsorption of emulsifying constituents by the impurities also takes place if the liquid is allowed to stand for some time or is subjected to mechanical shocks, as by centrifuging. Suint liquor may, prior to treatment, be raised to a temperature of 100 DEG C. Hot liquid from a vessel 3, Fig. 2, and acid from a vessel 5 are mixed by baffles 4 as they enter a vessel 6, from which the mixture is drawn through a pipe 7 to a perforated pipe 12, which distributes it in a vessel 8 in which a vacuum is maintained by means of a pump 10. Light impurities rise and are returned through a pipe 17 to the vessel 6, where they collect as a magma on the surface. The purified liquid is discharged through a pipe 14. Steam ejectors 15, 16 assist discharge through the pipes 14, 17 respectively. A float valve 19 is provided to break the vacuum when the liquid level rises unduly. The supply of acid from the vessel 5 may be automatically controlled by a device for electrically indicating the hydrogen ion concentration. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the pipe 7 draws cold suint liquor from the lower portion of a washing bowl 22. Heavy impurities settle in the vessel 8 and are passed to a collector 25. The purified liquid is returned to the bowl by a pump 24.ALSO:In purifying for re-use water which has been used for washing wool, the water is subjected to a vacuum to promote the separation of suspended impurities. Suint liquor may prior to treatment be raised to a temperature of 100 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that comparatively pure potassium carbonate can be obtained by calcining suint liquor which has been treated in the manner described above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
