Abstract

To prevent the deposition of carbon in refractories from the decomposition of carbon containing gases, through contact with refractory blocks or masses, particularly such as contain iron oxide, the blocks etc., are treated with up to 0.5 per cent by weight of the blocks with organic boric acid salts or lead, nickel, mercury, arsenic, zinc or cadmium in the form of metal, or as oxides or inorganic or organic compounds or manganese as metal or as oxides, or metallic aluminium, magnesium, chromium or alkali metal, either individually or in any desired mixture or combination. The substances may be added to the raw mix or during the burning, as by mixing volatile organic boric acid salts with the combustion gases, or to the finished blocks or masses, as by dipping them into a solution. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of boric acid, inorganic boric acid salts, alkali salts, chromium, magnesium, manganese and aluminium salts. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
