[Class 28 (i).] Cooking-apparatus comprises a pair of electrically - heated cooking - plates, a pivotally mounted operating-arm for one of the plates whereby it can be moved with respect to the other, from and into co-operating cooking- position, and a pivotal connection between the operating-arm and its plate which connection enables both plates to assume a substantially parallel relation when brought into co-operation within a range of different degrees of separation therebetween. As shown in Fig. 2, the cooking- plates 10, 11 are heated by elements 52 of the form described in Specification 144, 767, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], the lower plate 11 being supported on the inturned flange 19 of the casing 15 by spacers 20 and screws 21. The upper plate 10 is covered by a casing 10a and is provided with an upstanding hollow substantially rectangular member 30 which is hinged by a pin 31 in a depending opening 24b in a hollow arm 24 which is pivoted at 26 to a bracket 25a secured to the casing 15. The weight of the arm and upper plate is counterbalanced by a spring 33 which is hooked at one end, over a pin 34 on the arm 24 and, at the other end, over an adjustable tensioning bolt 34a. The arm 24 is operated by a spring- handle 35, and an extension 25b of the bracket 25a, shaped to accommodate the handle, acts as a stop for the plate 10 when it is fully opened. The plate 11 has an upstanding rim 36 on which rest the front and sides of the plate 10. The plate 10 has a rear depending flange 37 which rests on the face of the plate 10 and the rear flange 36 is apertured to permit juices &c. to flow over a spout 46 into a receptacle when the apparatus is used for broiling. The casing 15 is supported by legs 17 which, at one side of the casing, are telescopic, the inner sliding portion 41 having a slot 44 engaging a pin which projects inwardly from the leg. The slot is shaped positively to retain the portion 41 in the extended position. The upper plate may be raised so that pancakes, for example, may be cooked upon the lower plate. The control means described in Specification 384,527 may be associated with the apparatus. The upper plate is heated to a greater extent than the lower plate to compensate for the greater radiation losses of the upper plate.
