Abstract

Asymmetric ureas are made by causing salts or esters of cyanic acid other than the isocyanates of aminoazobenzene and its derivatives to act upon aminonaphthol sulphonic acids. In examples (1) H acid is condensed with 4-nitrophenylisocyanate in benzene to form the corresponding nitro-urea which may be reduced; some 4<1>.4<1>-dinitrodiphenylurea is formed as a by-product; the following isocyanates may also be used: 3-nitrophenyl, 4-chlorphenyl, 2 : 5-dichlorphenyl, p-tolyl, p-anisidyl, naphthyl, benzoylaminophenyl, chlorbenzoylaminophenyl, nitrobenzoylaminophenyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl and benzyl, and potassium and sodium cyanates; other aminonaphthol sulpho acids are also specified, (2) H or J acid is condensed with potassium cyanate in aqueous acetic acid.
