Abstract
401,891. Vehicle lamps. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Roper, V. J. ; 1849, Lampson Road, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) Nov. 18, 1932, No. 32680. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1931. [Classes 39 (ii), 75 (ii), and 75 (iv).] Lenses ; bulbs.-A system of lighting for road vehicles comprises a pair of headlamps each having a lens and two or more independently operated adjacent light sources with means for holding them in predetermined positions relative to the axis of a parabolic or like reflector, the lenses of the two lamps differing in the amount of their horizontal spreading effect. The Specification describes and illustrates the beams obtained by selectively switching on variously arranged filaments, including symmetrical beams for driving on the open road, asymmetric non-glaring beams for use when passing other vehicles, and downwardly directed beams for use in towns. Fig. 1 shows an electric lamp bulb having a single filament 22 arranged at an angle of about 45‹ to the plane of a pair of V-shaped filaments 10, 11 disposed side by side at right angles to the axis of the lamp. In one modification the single filament is dispensed with and the pair of V-shaped filaments arranged in parallel planes, whilst in others the single filament also is V-shaped and arranged in a plane parallel to, or at right angles to, that of the pair of V-shaped filaments. The bulbs have rippled fronts 21, as described in Specification 205,747, [Class 75 (iv), Lamps &c., Kinds &c. of], and the sockets 16 are fitted with pins 20 for selectively locating the filaments with respect to the reflector. Fig. 11 shows a lens provided on one face over areas 33, 38, 39 with vertically disposed half flutes and/or sideward bending prisms, and over areas 32, 34 with full flutes. The same face or the other face is provided over areas 32, 34 with a series of downwardly refracting prisms and over the area 33 with a single downwardly refracting prism. In the lens of the other lamp all the vertical flutes are full flutes and the horizontal spreading effect is somewhat greater.
