[Class 106 (ii).] In dynamometers of the fan brake type for use particularly with aircraft engines, the fan rotor 4 is mounted directly on the stub 1 of the engine shaft within a casing 5, which is free to oscillate on the shaft and is fitted with guide vanes 12, 13 to direct the air issuing tangentially from the rotor into a radial direction. From the vanes 12 the air passes through passages 8 having vanes 17, 18 and is delivered axially from adjustable vanes 20 to serve as cooling- air for the engine cylinders 2. The vanes 13 are fitted in a return passage 9, and the outlet from this passage is controlled by a slide valve 29, an additional slide valve 28 serving to control the intake aperture of the fan. Adjustable vanes, each comprising a fixed member 35 and a pivoted member 37, may be provided in the passage 8, while adjustable pivoted vanes 39 may be provided in the return passage 9 together with fixed vanes 40.
