Abstract
400,247. Electrolytic cells. EVANS, D. J., Glen Cairn, Shipbourne Road, Tonbridge, Kent. April 20, 1932, No. 11329. [Class 41.] The electrodes consist of rectangular graphite slabs g, Fig. 1, spaced to form a vertical gap through which the whole of the liquid passing through the cell flows. The electrodes are mounted in ebonite holders h secured to the side walls of the cell and are provided with lead-in conductors j of the kind described in Specification 390,647. The electrode surfaces preferably stand out clear of the holders. The gap between the electrodes is adjustable by means of packing strips h<2>. In a modification, Fig. 5, four anode holders h are mounted in recesses l in the interior wall of the cell to form gaps with a central square metal cathode m. The cathode may be hollow and an additional anode n provided within it. The electrodes m, n are mounted between liquid-distributing chambers and connection is made to them by rods m<1>, n<1> passing through the cover. In order to equalize passage of liquid through the gaps, the cover may be hemispherical or cylindrical and provided with a tangential outlet to produce a turbulent flow. The cell may be made of moulded ebonite or a synthetic resin.
