377,826. Electrolytic purification of liquids. SIEMENS-ELEKTRO-OSMOSE GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Aug. 24, 1931, No. 23809. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1930. Addition to 339,673, [Class 41, Electrolysis]. [Class 41.] A number of 3-compartment cells for the purification of liquids are arranged so that each compartment is adjacent to the corresponding compartment of the next cell and communicates with it by apertures in the separating partition or by short pipes. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 6, the liquid to be purified, e.g. water, enters the centre compartment M\ flows successively through the compartments M<2>, M<3>, M<4>, and passes by a trough r<4> to the second series M<5> .. M<8> and finally leaves by an adjustable outlet l<1>. The electrode compartments A, K are flushed by percolation of liquid from the centre compartments through the diaphragms. The cathode flushing liquid overflows by slightly rising passages into a slot r<5> from which it passes by an outlet l<2> to a trough r<6>. The anode flushing liquid passes by horizontal passages to troughs r<7>, r<8> and thence by adjustable overflows l<3>, l<2> to the trough r<6>. Each set of diaphragms d is made in one piece, over which slotted partitions t are forced. The partitions are provided with communicating apertures alternately at the top and bottom. Alternatively the flushing liquid for the electrode spaces may be drawn from one or more of the centrespaces, e.g. the last but one. In a modification the liquid flows from each compartment of a set to the corresponding compartment of the adjacent set by a short pipe of adjustable height. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the outlet pipe l is mounted between plates m<1>, m<2> connected by a bolt n so as to be adjustable in a slot q in the wall o. The diaphragms may be of hard rubber or gurocel. They may be fixed in grooves in the cells by a cement of rubber latex with heavy spar, quartz or gurocel powder.
